10 things new photographers may not know 1/10

Looking or asking about camera setting!

We have all done it! It’s a learning curve!

Now you may not think this is a stupid thing to do! In theory it’s not! But what new photographers don’t realise unlike photographers who have been shooting for say five years is,

Unless you’re shooting at the same photoshoot, at the same time with the same lens and camera mixed with the same lighting

Reading or asking for camera settings are pretty much worthless!

I’ve watched many of hours from amazing photographers showing their amazing images, showing the settings that come with the finished image.

Now this can also be a bonus if your looking at the bokeh or amount of grain in the shot but that’s evident from looking at any image!

Once again so much about photography is about the moment and working with what we have! Be that the location or the model as much as the gear used!

Most new photographers done understand that what works for Sony users differ from that of canon or Nikon for instance !

Also it could be that one user is using a full frame camera and ones using a crop sensor !

All the above would result in less light or a difference in quality, and so many other variations from they think they will get from looking at the setting other photographers have posted with their images

In conclusion, the best things to take away from seeing others work and setting is to see the benefits of what you can get if you mix those setting with the right lighting,

And then look at each of the following !

  • Look at the eyes to see what lights modifiers and reflectors have been used.
  • Look at the shadows to see where the light is coming from up down left right so on.
  • Look at the background is is in focus or out of focus this will tell you why they have used the settings if there is bokeh or depth of field then the setting would be 1.4 – 2.8 … if it’s in focus this could mean that the lens has been set to f6.3 up.
  • Has any light been used at all or is it just natural lighting
  • Then if you try shooting you can pick parts and set your camera to help replicate what your taking . Set camera for back ground darkness and depth of field .. bring in subject and then add light to light the subject!

What have I been upto this week! At Adrian Day Photography

Birthday week for me! It’s coming round to that time of year again ! Another year older for me and another year of being a photographer!

I’ve now been into photography twenty eight years! Wow how time has gone so fast!

I’ve not been a professional photographer all that time as I was still at school a good part of that and I took some time out before I come back to the art so now it’s been a little over 20 years picking up a camera !

Do you know what? There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t like photography! I honestly love what I do and enjoy everything about it! Even those times when I didn’t quite get the shot I was expecting! or that pose that just didn’t hit focus !

This week I’ve had a lot going on! Looking through where I have been and evaluating where I’m heading! What I’ve yet to accomplish and what I’ve already accomplished!

I’ve managed to get my work in places I didn’t think possibly on the streets of London and magazines that span the globe! I’ve also worked with amazing clients models and gained some fantastic friends along the way!

I’ve been lucky enough to use some great products cameras and locations that I’ve captured beautiful images I never thought I would create!

This lockdown has given me ideas and thoughts that have perplexed me! But also has shown me that even in the times we are working in! There is no reason we can’t keep an open mind and still be creative!

We are only held back by our imagination and today world doesn’t have to stop in the real world but the World Wide Web can open up endless possibilities!

So this week I’ve been busy !

  • Created and Etsy store.
  • Created a new dot com for Adrian Day photography.
  • Created a social media shop on my pages
  • Edited a number of images that I’ve revamped to today’s style.
  • took on E-learning ! (Yes I’ve been a photographer for 20 years but times change and it’s time to go with it!)
  • Also uploaded a number of images and links to Pinterest so people can see and maybe grow and get inspiration from my work!.

See now the view I have is that I’ve been waiting to long to do all the above and thinking that things will change!

Change only comes from doing something about what you want and need every single day! We can’t expect things to get better by doing the same thing every single day!

Okay guys and girls here are a few links for you to check out ! this is some of what I’ve been creating this week! Please if you like something show it some love ! Comment follow like it’s amazing to have your input and connecting with amazing people

Please let me know on here also if you like my posts so I know if I’m doing something right ! And hey it will be good to chat!

Fighting fit during lockdown! Keeping business going as usual

Let me start by saying I know why we are doing this (to save lives) and to help each other to keep going in the future! We need to look after each other!

Lockdown definitely is taking the life out of business

Everyone in the uk and across the would are finding it very hard to keep going

It’s a fight we live every day but so much more when in a lockdown situation. Government officials say that photographers are a non essential business! But documenting life and the situation we are all in I feel we are essential

There isn’t any reason that we can’t keep going we can shoot from a distance more than that of a school teacher or a shop worker!

We are creating works and we can do that on location out in the streets and out in the middle of nowhere and we can still keep everything safe yet still keep our family provided for! And also still put money into the big government fun pot!

It’s seems that yet again it’s going to be a few works of keeping the website up and working on the jobs that are needed in the background! Things like web design, learning new editing techniques, learning how to create BTS videos with the new products we have just had delivered!

You may not know it but being a photographer it’s not just about doing taking pictures ! There is a long list of things that need doing, to keep business going !

  1. Admin
  2. Editing
  3. Learning the latest technologies
  4. Advertising
  5. Keeping up with social media
  6. Replying to everyone and keeping visible to potential clients
  7. Meeting with clients
  8. Sending out products and prints
  9. Creating photo books
  10. Sending out images for publications
  11. And that’s just to start!
