Low light photography! A few simple things to know and understand when working in low light conditions.

Low light photography can be a challenging but rewarding experience. It requires a combination of technical knowledge and creative thinking to capture beautiful and unique images in dimly lit environments. In this essay, we will explore some tips and techniques for getting the best results from your camera in low light situations, and how to avoid common pitfalls that lead to blurry

images.

The first step in low light photography is to understand the limitations of your camera. Most cameras perform best in bright light, and as the light level decreases, the camera’s ability to capture sharp and detailed images also decreases. This is because the camera’s sensor needs a certain amount of light to function properly, and in low light situations, the sensor may not be able to gather enough light to produce a clear image.

To compensate for this, you will need to use a longer shutter speed, which allows more light to reach the sensor. However, using a longer shutter speed also increases the risk of camera shake, which can result in blurry images. To avoid this, you will need to use a tripod or some other form of support to keep your camera steady. Additionally, you can use the self-timer function on your camera to avoid camera shake caused by pressing the shutter button.

Another way to increase the amount of light reaching the sensor is to use a wider aperture. Aperture is the opening in the lens that controls how much light reaches the sensor. By using a wider aperture, more light can enter the camera and reach the sensor. However, this also affects the depth of field, which is the area of the image that is in focus. A wider aperture will result in a shallower depth of field, which can be useful for creating a sense of depth and separation in your images.

Another important aspect of low light photography is ISO. ISO is a measure of the camera’s sensitivity to light. The lower the ISO, the less sensitive the camera is to light and the less noise in the image. However, in low light situations, you may need to use a higher ISO to get a well-exposed image. But, as you increase the ISO, you will also increase the amount of noise in the image, which can be unsightly. So, it’s a balance between having a well-exposed image and having noise in the image.

In addition to adjusting these technical settings, you can also use creative techniques to enhance your low light images. For example, you can use a flashlight or other light source to illuminate specific areas of the image. You can also use long exposures to capture the movement of light in the scene. This can create interesting and dynamic images that are not possible in bright light.

In conclusion, low light photography can be a challenging but rewarding experience. It requires a combination of technical knowledge and creative thinking to capture beautiful and unique images in dimly lit environments. By understanding the limitations of your camera, using a tripod or other form of support, adjusting the aperture, ISO and shutter speed, and using creative techniques, you can get the best results from your camera in low light situations and avoid the common pitfalls that lead to blurry images.

What would you like to learn about photography?

Been a while since Iโ€™ve posted a full blog post!

Now you all know Iโ€™m first and foremost a photographer .. a portrait and boudoir photographer predominately.. but over the last year Iโ€™ve been taking time out to gain skills in landscape and nature photography..

Also having won a number of competition with my landscape work I feel Iโ€™m doing pretty well! Like having my work shown at the fujifilm print life stand at the Birmingham photography show.

Fujifilm print life stand !

Now I know Iโ€™ve been doing short posts and running this is because Iโ€™ve been doing so many things Iโ€™ve not had time to do deep messages and long posts!

Well Iโ€™ve just started to add to that! Even more!

With a new section to my website and my Adrian Day YouTube channel this is going to be where I post tips, tricks and reviews of photography products and ideas to help all you guys and girls become better photographers and to enjoy the craft and the creative side of the industry.

But before I start posting videos and blog posts about this I would love to hear from others as to what you would like to see! .. I know what I look for but thatโ€™s me ! I donโ€™t just want to post what I want to know .. I want to post at the needs of others !

See this could be anything for creative tips like using a prism or coloured lighting. Or it could be what I suggest to be the best lens for portraits or landscapes

It could be that you want to know about editing and how I edit my images using Adobe Lightroom or photoshop.. and what you want to learn specifically like colour toning or black and white conversion

Maybe you only have your phone to take pictures and thatโ€™s a perfectly great option as they say โ€œthe best camera is the one you have with you!โ€ and want to know the best apps I use to edit the questions are endless!

But please feel free to comment below with your questions and I will write them all down and create future posts to answer your questions !

Also coming soon to help users of lightroom Iโ€™m going to start putting together downloadable products Things like brushes for photoshop and presets and Lutโ€™s for both Lightroom and photoshop

These will be priced at silly prices ! So anyone can obtain them on the smallest of budgets to help them grow and learn faster! I currently have over 50 presets from colour to black and white! Ready to go! Just sorting out the website over the next few weeks to make them downloadable for you all!

There is so much more to come ! So if you have read this far please hit the follow button so that you can be notified when I post.. and as I say please leave a comment below if you find this page helpful and have a question you want answering!

Once again thank you everyone for your support and sticking with me over covid months ! Itโ€™s much appreciated!

BTW WHEN LEAVING A COMMENT .. YOU DONT NEED TO ADD EMAIL ADDRESS OR OTHER DETAILS BUT PLEASE LEAVE A NAME SO I CAN RELATE THE POST BACK TO YOUR QUESTION.. .. BUT PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT BE GREAT TO CONNECT TO YOU ALL!

More BTS from on set of the Essex serpent, a six part drama staring Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes

Well itโ€™s been a couple of weeks since I posted my first sets of images ! But I managed to find a few more images of the set in my unsure list!

I think these ones have come out pretty well!

These images show the beauty of being a photographer and being able to capture scenes like this !

Please feel free to share this post! Give me a shout out ! If you like them! I know Toms fans have been so amazing with all they have done with my posts so once again thanks guys and girls โค๏ธโค๏ธ

As a say here are four new images

Twitter exploded my image.. or was it more thanks to Tom Hiddleston fans

I posted an image last week and it started to gain a little traction. Likes started pinging with retweetโ€™s popping up all over the place .. the then come the quotes and followers too!

Iโ€™ve not been one to use Twitter! Iโ€™ve been adding the odd post here and there mostly posts that are auto posted via the blog/website.

A bit like this post…

Now I noticed that my numbers of website view was going up ! By the second .. any normal week would have anything from 100-1000 views but this wasnโ€™t seeming to be any normal week!

I had posted some images from the set of the Essex serpent drama just images of the film set .. btw this is staring staring Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes .. (will pop a couple of images below of what I shared)

Within the first couple of hours the web views had gone up to 400 and I had seen there was a few likes and retweetโ€™s popping up on my phone notifications.. but hadnโ€™t taken to much notice.. as I follow some very active posters ๐Ÿ˜‰

Itโ€™s wasnโ€™t until a my partner said that my phone was pinging to much she put it on silent.. that I took a closer look!

So opened the Twitter app and there was so many notifications.. people actually was liking commenting and retweeting my work .. such great comments there was over 70 likes .. now Iโ€™m used to posting to Instagram! Where it seems Iโ€™m either on a shadow ban or instagrams just blocked people seeing my posts.. as I get around 20-30 likes and the odd few comments ..

So when Twitter started kicking off I was shocked!

I looked at the website stats every hour and it was going up and up ! 600 – 700 – 800

By the end of the day there was over 1500 views to the website and the Twitter had more likes retweetโ€™s and followers than Iโ€™ve ever had!

To say I was shocked

Itโ€™s an understatement!

So may of Tom Hiddlestonโ€™s fans had liked and tweeted I thought it was only kind to thank thank all! So I wrote a post thanking them all! Said post ( check it out here )

Now I didnโ€™t think that it would bubble up again! But it did and out did the day before post! Again due to amazing fans of Tom!

Over 1600! Views to the website!

What I didnโ€™t realise was that with Twitter there is a little insights icon, that you can check to see how your post is going ! I could see there was a lot of likes comments and retweetโ€™s but I didnโ€™t know you could see other details too! It wasnโ€™t until yesterday.. (shows how often I use Twitter )

That I found the icon and started clicking through to see how my posts has done

Now I posted in the week 9 main posts ! From this blog .. some just an image others a long ish blog post ..

The more I clicked through the stats the more I got surprised! The views I was getting to me was off my standard scale !! Again being used to small numbers of impressions .. going by instagrams intake ..

I was getting around 3000 per post Iโ€™m used to 300 per post !

Then there was some big one 8k 10k

Then I see it ! The post I did thanking all of Tom Hiddleston fans, had blown up ! And was just over the 29k

๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š 29,000 impressions! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

Itโ€™s the most Iโ€™ve ever had ! And to say itโ€™s made my year so far is an understatement! The amount of love support shares tweets retweet quotes and comments that must have taken to get that amount of views is astonishing!

Iโ€™m overwhelmed honestly, never could I have dreamt that it would take changing my approach to social media to get my work seen by so many people !

And to not only get seen but make some amazing new friends and followers !

So in conclusion .. when all things are going bad donโ€™t despair or give up! Just Try changing things .. do something a little different..

We canโ€™t expect to get a different result by always doing the same thing!

Lastly

Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š to all those amazing people who took the time out of their day to share the love on what Iโ€™ve been posting ! Youโ€™re the kindest people Iโ€™ve had the pleasure to meet! And you really have helped someone who was in a deep dark place to realise there is a reason to live ! A reason to fight and a reason to show the world his art ! His photography!

I have so much love and respect for you all right now ! And I wish I could put into words just how grateful Iโ€™m am to each and every one of you ! Have a fantastic Easter .. stay safe ..

thanks again Adrian

There it was gone! As fast as the Essex serpent set was built it was gone! along with the stars of the drama Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes, but here is a few images before it went.

Wasnโ€™t there long at all!

Itโ€™s like it was never there! Maldon town become the setting for the new six part drama โ€˜the Essex serpentโ€™, staring Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes..

Last week a couple to big tents popped up, then a number of big trucks and what seemed like 100 set workers ! set to work to put together a Victorian setting with boats, ships and what looks like a Victorian dock. With all the trimmings..

I was keeping fingers crossed that filming would take longer than just a few days and that I would have the luck and pleasure of seeing the amazing cast a crew of the drama. But life got in the way ! And I couldnโ€™t make it there to photograph Tom or Claire! In the midst of filming..

I was lucky to have got a number of set shots but the only time I could have got a shot of one of the stars the security guards got in the way so managed to get his nose haha! Not what I wanted !

Wish I could have managed to get some more chances .. would have been great to get some stars into the portfolio.. and give his fans something to look at!

Sadly I only managed to get set shots ! Like those you see above!

Just a week later I managed to get down to the quayside where filming was .. and there is was … gone! Not a dot of dust no lumps of coal or grains of salt! It was back to standard Maldon quayside!

As fast as it come, it was gone again!

Yet another lights down on filming and another film, filmed in Maldon .. .. itโ€™s great that this little sea side town has been home to so many filming sets .. looking forward to the next one! Keep eyes open

Images on the set of Sarah Perryโ€™s novel the Essex serpent. Currently being filmed by Apple TV staring Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes

These are three of my favourite images from being on the set of Essex serpent.. I really wished that I was feeling well enough to have got down to the set on the second day of shooting!

To then be able to get some better shots with the two stars of the six part drama ! Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes ! But sadly this wasnโ€™t the case!

It would have been so amazing to have had more of a chance to get some fantastic behind the scenes shots !

As I know his fans would have loved to see them!

Sorry all! But these images of the set I think would look amazing on a canvas or on a Ali dibond print !
